Comedy fans got a bonus at the Rivoli Monday, scene of the weekly alternative showcase Alt.COMedy lounge, when big-deal alternative comics Janeane Garofalo, Will Farrell and Harland Williams crashed the bill.
Garofalo is co-starring in the Abbie Hoffman biopic Abbie!, while Williams (Rocketman) and Saturday Night Live's Farrell are in Superstar, the Molly Shannon movie filming here based on her Mary Katherine Gallagher character.
By accounts, Harland went up in the guise of impressionist comic "Jerry from Stoney Creek" and did "hack" situational sendups (Jack Nicholson at a drive-through window, a couple with Sylvester Stallone as their baby), and he and Farrell improv-ed a scene stuck on a desert island together.
Garofalo, in trademark style, went up with her notepad and read observations about Toronto -- this being her second film here. "She said Toronto gay men are not as attractive as in L.A.," according to one fan in the audience. " 'They let it all hang out here -- and kudos to them.' " On the other hand, Garofalo enthused about our sexy squeegees, saying she gave one a toonie just because he was so gorgeous.
