Feeling sorry for Katie Holmes
By MICHAEL RECHTSHAFFEN, Special to QMI Agency

Holmes hinted at divorce

Whether or not you believe that Katie Holmes was as naive as she appeared when she was swept off her feet by Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale romance back in 2005 -- you still gotta feel a little sorry for her.

After all, here you had a wide-eyed 26-year-old being proposed to atop the Eiffel Tower by the same guy whose Cocktail poster used to hang on her bedroom wall.

And he was professing his love for her by jumping on the furniture of daytime talk royalty and sealing the deal at an enchanted 15th-century Italian castle.

But despite the once-upon-a-time setup, it wasn't too long before Princess Katie started to look more like a damsel in distress, trapped by the realization that she had entered into a relationship with one of the most controlling men in Hollywood.

Behind that trademark, too-tight toothy grin, resided an individual so ferociously protective of his image and the way it's played out in the media that he's been known to demand journalists attending his movie junkets to sign a document promising not to spin their stories off to any other publications or sites.

We know, because we had to sign one prior to a group interview or forfeit the privilege of quoting Mr. Cruise.

Whether or not Katie Holmes was aware of what she had signed on for at the time, it probably started becoming clearer when little Suri started speaking her first words that Mommy would have little say in their only child's upbringing.

By the time the divorce papers were filed on June 29, Holmes, now a much older, wiser 33, did so with the full realization that she wasn't just taking on an aging Hollywood Golden boy whose beloved all-American, gee-whiz heroics once made him an indomitable box-office force.

She knew that she was also picking a fight with a very, very powerful institution that doesn't take litigation lightly -- namely, the Church of Scientology.

As legal teams are being assembled and lines are drawn in the sand over their now six-year-old daughter, the resulting custody battle could reach some truly ugly proportions, even by tawdry Tinseltown standards.

In the one corner, there would be Team Katie, who would likely place Suri in a manipulative Cruise-Scientology scenario that wouldn't sound that different from key Rosemary's Baby plot points.

In the other corner, there would be Team Tom, who would need to call Katie's emotional stability into question, likely portraying her as a paranoid basket case unfit to be granted sole custody of their child.

While Cruise may have been reportedly "blindsided" by the divorce papers, you can be sure he won't be caught napping where his closely guarded public image is concerned, and that would go double for the Church of Scientology.

Both just have too much at stake, PR-wise, not to go in with all guns blazing in what is destined to be a media feeding fest.

And, like most divorce custody proceedings, young Suri would end up with the most to lose.

So much for Happily Ever After.
