HOLLYWOOD -- The former racist dictatorship of South Africa is partly responsible for John Hurt appearing in one of his career highlights, the sci-fi thriller Alien.
Hurt, who now calls his tales of old movies his "silly stories," says he dropped out of the cast of Ridley Scott's film for an alternate role in Zulu Dawn, which was to shoot at the same time in South Africa in 1978. The taxi was about to take him to the airport in London for the flight south.
