Jason Lee has signed on for the upcoming "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie.

Variety.com reports the "My Name is Earl" star will play David Seville in the film, which is a hybrid of live-action and CGI.

Tim Hill ("Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties") will direct the screenplay by Jon Vitti ("The Simpsons Movie").'

The film, which is based on the 1950s animated series, follows three harmonizing chipmunks that are continually up to no good.

For his next project, Lee will provide one of the voices for the animated film "Underdog."

Production on "Alvin and the Chipmunks" is set to start March 28, with a planned Dec. 14 release date.
