Lohan hopes her luck doesn't run out
By LOUIS B. HOBSON - Calgary Sun

HOLLYWOOD -- It's not just in movies Lindsay Lohan has the occasional bout of bad luck.

Lohan limped into a recent L.A. press conference on crutches sporting an ankle cast.

"I have a hairline fracture in my foot. I was coming out of the shower and slipped. The worst thing is I can't wear heels with the cast," explained Lohan.

She was quick to point out the irony of her condition.

"It's really funny, because I'm here to promote a movie called Just My Luck, and it was just my luck to hurt my foot the day before my interviews."

In Just My Luck, which opens Friday, Lohan plays Manhattanite Ashley Albright, who practically wallows in phenomenal luck, success, popularity and advantage. Then, one day at a masquerade party she kisses Jake Hardin (Chris Pine), who couldn't be more unlucky. During the kiss, Ashley and Jake exchange luck. And there's double irony in Lohan's recent accident.

Back in March of 2005, on the first day of filming on Just My Luck in New York, Lohan sprained her ankle.

She recalls the moment with a wince.

"I was stepping out off the curb into a cab. My line was 'I can't afford to be injured right now,' and down I went.

"I started screaming and wailing in pain because I'd sprained my ankle. It was so serious I almost tore a ligament."

All things considered, Lohan, 19, does not consider herself an unlucky person.

"Everyone has to go through highs and lows in life just to learn to appreciate things more, but if I've actually had a sting of bad luck like Ashley, then I don't know about it."

Still, she admits to cherishing good luck charms.

"My bracelet is a good luck charm. I got it at Caviar and Kind on Sunset Blvd. You can see it on the cover of W magazine.

"Bree Turner, who stars with me in Just My Luck, bought me a ring I consider a positive charm, and I have always considered my sister my best good luck charm."

Lohan also has her pet superstitions.

"No hats on tables and no hats on beds. I'm a psychotic when it comes to hats on beds, and for some reason, everyone seems to put their hats on my bed.

"I get so mental if I leave a hat on the bed.

"I need to put a sign up in my room."

In Just My Luck, when it dawns on Ashley there was a magical passing of luck because of a kiss, she goes in search of the man to reverse it.

Trouble is, he was wearing a mask, so Ashley has to kiss every guy it could have been.

Lohan knows there are people who see this random kissing as a mirror of her own life.

"If I actually dated as many men as the magazines say, I'd be dead by now. Honestly, I would.

"When I do go out, it's usually with my girlfriends. I'm a real girl's girl."

She also insists if she "went to as many clubs and parties as they say I do I wouldn't have time to work and I'm very busy filming almost all the time."

But she is willing to take some blame for the image the paparazzi paint of her. "When you come into this business, you want to be written about to an extent, but in pursuing that, you put yourself on a pedestal, which allows the press to build you up and then tear you down."

Her experiences, especially these past two years, have taught Lohan to "work harder, and let your performances and films speak for you."

In addition to Just My Luck, Lohan has Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion coming out this summer and Emilio Estevez's ensemble drama Bobby in the fall.

These two films alone have seen her working with Meryl Streep, Anthony Hopkins, Demi Moore, Sharon Stone, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Kline and Lily Tomlin.

"Even if I don't have scenes with some of these people, I learn by watching them."

She's also completed Chapter 27, in which Jared Leto plays Mark David Chapman in the days leading up to John Lennon's murder.

On every set, Lohan is besieged by paparazzi.

"I usually have to have bodyguards on set with me.

"It's not pleasant, especially if there are too many at one time."

Next up for Lohan is Bill, with Aaron Eckhart, in which she plays a rebellious teenager.
