“Oh, Sandra.”
And with those words Nepean’s Sandra Oh, who after a long career as a television and film actress hit the big-time two years ago with a starring role on ABC’s high-profile medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, has landed on Mr. Blackwell’s annual worst-dressed list.
The Sideways star didn’t famously forget her underwear in front of the paparazzi like pop star Britney Spears and hotel heiress Paris Hilton, who the former designer has dubbed the “Screamgirls” and placed at the top of his list.
But Oh does find herself in some pretty famous company, squeaking on at number nine right behind Tori Spelling and in front of Meryl Streep.
“Drowning in beads, bangles and prehistoric bows, she’s layered lunacy — from toes to nose!” exclaimed Blackwell.
He could have very well been talking about the ruffled violet Vera Wang frock Oh wore to the Emmy Awards in August, which she accessorized with a number of silver-hued necklaces. Oh herself reportedly joked the look was a little like “the last of the Romanoffs with a little Run-DMC,” while E! Fashion Police dubbed it “ghetto chic,” and not in a good way.
Reports were more favourable for a shimmering, draped taupe number Oh wore to her best supporting actress win at the Golden Globes last January, when she appeared in a number of tabloids’ fashion spreads. And E! Fashion Police loved the “perfectly polished” little black number Oh wore recently to announce the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards nominees, but couldn’t refrain from snarking, “it’s better than anything else we’ve seen her wear.”
Blackwell, who has been compiling his list for 47 years now, also singled out Camilla Parker Bowles, wife of Britain’s Prince Charles, party-girl actress Lindsay Lohan and singer Christina Aguilera.
Spears has been on the list for the last six years, and though Blackwell didn’t specifically mention Spears’ recent Brazilian wax-and-caesarean-scar flashing episodes on his list, he did dub her and Hilton “two peas in an overexposed pod.”
Singer Mariah Carey, American Idol judge Paula Abdul and actress Sharon Stone were also singled out.
This year Blackwell did have praise for the likes of Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren, Barbra Streisand and Beyonce Knowles, urging his worst-dressed nominees to emulate such “fabulous fashion independents.”
Blackwell’s worst-dressed rundown has become a Hollywood tradition over the decades, poking fun at icons ranging from Queen Elizabeth to Elizabeth Taylor. Blackwell, whose forgotten first name is Richard, was one of Los Angeles’ top designers in the 1960s. He dressed the likes of Jayne Mansfield, Peggy Lee and Nancy Reagan.
