The release Friday of the nightmarish sci-fi fantasy Dark City may not be circled on most cineastes' calendars -- though it's worth the money to see homeboy Kiefer Sutherland's over-the-top Peter Lorre-esque mad scientist.
But for people who follow comic-book-influenced culture, the movie is noteworthy for the return of Australian director Alex Proyas -- his first film since witnessing the death of his friend Brandon Lee on the set of The Crow almost five years ago from a gun injury. "We were very good friends. I never wanted to finish that movie," says Proyas, who says he's prone to depression. "I didn't give a damn about the movie frankly, my friend had died and that's all I could see. We shut down production and I went back to Sydney and spent a month trying to stop having nightmares."
