Director Jay Roach snared by Fox

The director behind "Austin Powers" and "Meet The Parents" has signed a development deal with Fox Pictures, Variety reports.

Jay Roach told Variety his decision to join Fox had something to do with the fact that he lives a short bike-ride away from the company's Hollywood headquarters.

"I loved campus life so much that when I was at USC, I taught there seven years just because I didn't want to leave, and the Fox lot feels a bit that way," Roach told Variety.

"I have this visualization of getting on my bike and pedaling over to this great little think tank, hanging out with funny, smart people. We talked to several studios about making a deal, but when pressed, it was clear most weren't in the mood to make these kinds of deals."

In fact, the first project Roach is developing for Fox is based on his neighborhood. The untitled film, which Roach is writing with "Saturday Night Live" writer Adam McKay, will pit the neighborhood's "most relentless socializer" against a privacy-loving new resident, Variety said.

Although the ink is still drying on the Fox deal, Roach has a busy dance-card before he can fulfill those commitments. His next project will be either a comedy entitled "Fifty First Kisses" or a third "Ausin Powers" movie, which is currently being written by star Mike Myers and his collaborator Michael McCullers.

Roach is also up to direct "Meet The Fockers," the proposed sequel to his hit, "Meet The Parents," and he is continuing work on his proposed film adaptation of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" for Disney, a big-screen version of Mad Magazine's "Spy vs. Spy" for Warner Bros., and he's linked to a pending project entitled "God Of Cookery," Variety said.
