SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Seth Rogen just spent several days with 125,000 freaks and geeks.
"I like the people at Comic-Con," the 26-year-old says of what has become a critical juncture in Hollywood's hype machine. "If they're not interested in what you're doing, you're f---ed."
And to his relief -- as well as producer Judd Apatow, we're sure -- the attendees at this year's expo seemed primed for the new "weed-action comedy" Pineapple Express, opening Aug. 8.
But how does the Vancouver-born-and-bred star of TV's Freaks and Geeks, Knocked Up and Superbad stack up compared to folks sewn into storm-trooper and Wonder Woman costumes in terms of sheer nerd-ledge?
Fairly well, it turns out, as we discovered when we tested Rogen's IQ -- or rather Geek-Q -- with this pop (culture) quiz:
SUN: You've signed to write and star in a superhero movie based on The Green Hornet. Now the Hornet has his kung-fu driver Kato and Batman has Robin. Who are two other famous man-servants/sidekicks?
ROGEN: There's Captain America -- he had Bucky. And Superman had Supergirl -- but he also had the Superdog, right? Krypto? And the Avengers had a butler. I can't think of his name.
SUN: Jarvis, wasn't it?
ROGEN: Jarvis -- right. I don't know if he would count as a sidekick. He was just a man-servant.
SUN: How's The Green Hornet coming along?
ROGEN: It's going great. We're interviewing directors now.
SUN: That must be interesting.
ROGEN: It is an interesting process. Just being in an action movie is funny in that our producer is Neal Moritz who does all these action movies (The Fast and the Furious, I Am Legend). So for notes, we're used to Judd (Apatow) who will say: 'Make the emotions real.' Neal's notes will be: 'Can they drive into oncoming traffic?'
SUN: Porky's has been described as one of your influences. Name two other movies directed by Canadian Bob Clark. Hint: Both have Christmas in the title.
ROGEN: He didn't do A Christmas Story, did he?
SUN: He did.
ROGEN: I thought that was Jean Shepherd. I guess Jean Shepherd just wrote it.
SUN: The other one was a horror movie. Recently remade.
ROGEN: Oh, I know that. White Christmas?
SUN: Different colour.
ROGEN: Red Christmas? No -- Black Christmas. That's it. Hey, wasn't that banned when it came out? I think it was. I remember trying to rent it.
SUN: One of your next comedies is Kevin Smith's Zack and Miri Make a Porno. What famed porn princess later starred in the short-lived Canadian sci-fi series First Wave?
ROGEN: It's not Traci Lords, is it?
SUN: Yes, it is.
ROGEN: She's actually in Zack and Miri. She's great. She looks incredible. She just had a baby.
SUN: Elizabeth Banks, your co-star in Zack and Miri, played Betty Brant in the Spider-Man films. In the comics, she married a future Spider-Man villain. Who was he?
ROGEN: Who was it? It wasn't Flash (Thompson) was it? I have no idea.
SUN: The Hobgoblin.
ROGEN: The Hobgoblin! I never really read Spider-Man comics. Don't tell (Pineapple Express co-star James Franco), but I was more into X-Men.
SUN: You're writing an episode of The Simpsons with your Superbad and Green Hornet collaborator Evan Goldberg. What was the name of the first single off 1990's The Simpsons Sing the Blues album?
ROGEN: The first single? Is it Do The Bartman?
SUN: It is.
ROGEN: I had that album. I could probably name you a lot more than the first single.
SUN: Have you written your Simpsons episode yet?
ROGEN: We have.
SUN: Can you say anything about it?
ROGEN: I can say it's about comics. Comic Book Guy figures heavily into it.
SUN: Is he your favourite character?
ROGEN: He's one of them, definitely.
