TORONTO - The death of Bernie Mac clinches the deal -- no more Ocean's movies for director Steven Soderbergh.
"No!" Soderbergh said yesterday at the Toronto filmfest. Why?
"Bernie Mac."
Soderbergh directed three of the lighthearted crime capers: Ocean's Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen. Actor-comedian Bernie Mac was an integral part of the all-star ensemble, playing Frank Catton in all three.
"I was done anyway, but that was tragic," Soderbergh said of Mac's death on Aug. 9 in a Chicago hospital, where he was being treated for pneumonia but died from infection. "This is a story. People get outraged by all sorts of things (but) you don't see anyone talking about this."
Soderbergh said he learned that "90,000 people a year die of infections they get in a hospital in the U.S. That is double the amount of people that die in car accidents. It is a huge number, and that's what happened to Bernie."
