Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant ("Good Will Hunting") has signed on to helm "Last Days," a film loosely inspired by the Seattle rock scene in the early '90s, the Hollywood Reporter says.

Actor Michael Pitt ("Murder By Numbers," "The Dreamers") will star in the film, and Lukas Haas ("Bookies," "Johns") is in negotiations to join the cast.

HBO are putting up the money for the project, which Van Sant and Pitt have been working on for a number of years.

Van Sant's other directing credits include "My Own Private Idaho," "To Die For" and "Drugstore Cowboy."
