The post-Sept. 11 climate of fear and the need for justice and order make it a perfect time to resurrect "Robocop," says director Paul Verhoeven.
Citing an interview with the British magazine DVD Monthly, the Ain't It Cool movie news website reports that Verhoeven and original screenwriter Ed Neumeier have talked about making their own sequel to their 1987 original film.
"We both felt that it would be interesting to do something again, especially that we are now 15 years later, nearly, in time and a lot of things have happened to the American economy, the American military, politics and whatever, and I think you could do another fruition," Verhoeven told DVD Monthly.
"But I would not redo the first one, I would probably do a sequel, the first real sequel. Both of us (Verhoeven and Neumeier) thought it would be very interesting."
The first "Robocop" spawned a 1990 sequel with original star Peter Weller, directed by Irvin Kershner. "Robocop 3" followed in 1993, directed by Fred Dekker and with Robert John Burke taking over the title role. The "Robocop" franchise also spawned TV series in 1988 and 1994, as well as an animated series.
Verhoeven said he would like to see Weller reprise his role in a new "Robocop" movie.
"He would have to be resurrected, like he was asleep for so many years and they didn't use him anymore and now in this time of terrorism or whatever they would say okay, he can be resurrected again," Verhoeven said in the interview.
"He would be laying like a mummy in a warehouse basically and ... something like that. I think if you were to do it now, you would have to reflect the world we live in now," he told DVD Monthly. "I would start from scratch and find an innovative story that would satisfy all the people that are basically longing, like me, for a good sequel".
