He's hilarious, all right
By TYLER McLEOD

So you missed Harland Williams at Yuk Yuk's this summer, you say?

Nor could you be bothered to catch him hosting the Just For Laughs Homegrown Comic Search last night at Quincy's on Seventh?

Well, lucky for you, friend: The Comedy Network is here to bail your butt out once again.

They're presenting Harland's Hilarious Hour tomorrow at 10 p.m. on j.

If they didn't have the foresight to tape one of Williams' recent shows in Toronto, you would've entirely missed out on one of Canada's most irreverent and original comedians.

"Kids these days, you gotta love 'em," Williams reminds the audience.

"You gotta love 'em or they'll shoot you!"

Williams stole scenes on screen this fall in Superstar and Dog Park.

And you can always rent his memorable performances in Rocket Man, Down Periscope, Half-Baked and There's Something About Mary.

Or you can hear his multitude of voices on Ned's Newt and other animated series.

Yet none of these endeavours lets on to the true absurdity Williams is capable of.

One moment he seems like a normal stand-up comedian, curmudgeonly complaining about the body piercing trend. The next, Williams is comparing nipples to "elbow meat" or sharing a unique barbecue recipe.

He could break out into a (bad) song or ask someone in the front row their name and occupation.

Not that Williams necessarily does anything with this information. Sometimes he just asks and casually moves on as though he works for the census department.

Even that seems funny to Williams fans.

There is a segment of our population who crack up at the simplest expression on his face or squeak in his voice.

For them, there's hardly a dull moment in the special.

Well, it is Harland's Hilarious Hour, after all.

Not Harland's Lame Hour. Not Harland's Moderately Entertaining If You've Already Seen This Week's X-Files Hour.

Harland's Hilarious Hour.

Maybe he should've advertised Harland's Hilarious Calgary Appearances and we wouldn't be having this discussion to begin with.

Comedy fans these days... .
