TORONTO - British director Edgar Wright will be doing double duty as a film series programmer while shooting a film in Toronto in March.
Wright is taking part in The Wright Stuff, a series of his favourite films at the Bloor Cinema, which kicks off Saturday with a screening of his own opuses, Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Wright will be in attendance for a Q&A at that event and at the March 1 screening of two of his favourite Asian films, Stephen Chow's Shaolin Soccer and Ngai Kai Lam's manga-based film Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky.
The Wright Stuff coincides with Wright's filming in Toronto of the movie Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World, starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Other entries in the series include a March 8 streetgang-film double-bill of Phillip Kaufman's The Wanderers and Walter Hill's The Warriors (both from 1979), the Monkees movie Head (featuring Jack Nicholson) on March 14, a double bill of the Busby Berkeley musical Dames and the Brian DePalma horror musical Phantom of the Paradise on March 15, a marathon of his acclaimed British TV series Spaced on March 22 and a martial arts double bill on April 5
The series closes April 12 with a two-fer of his favourite Canadian films -- David Cronenberg's The Brood and Don McKellar's Last Night.
