Adam Scott takes on Canuck road film

TORONTO -- Adam Scott delivered a knockout performance as Will Ferrell's trash-talking brother Derek in Step Brothers.

He's providing hilarious one-liners in Party Down (airing stateside) and next summer will be seen in the Amy Adams romcom, Leap Year.

So a seemingly unlikely place to find the rising star is in the Canadian film "Passenger Side" playing a role that finds him driving his recovering addict brother around Los Angeles for a day while gabbing about the Montreal Canadiens (a team he knows nothing about in real life) and straight riffing on U.S. politics.

JAM! caught up with Scott following the premiere of his new film at the Toronto International Film Festival to find out what was on the last mixed-tape he made and whether or not those were his real abs in Step Brothers.

Q: What attracted you to do this small, Canadian film Passenger Side?

A: [Director] Matt [Bissonnette] and I have been friends for quite a while and he told me about this movie at the Cha-Cha Lounge in L.A., which I call the MTV beach house. And I believe I agreed to do it before I read it. But luckily the script was fun.

Q: How did you prepare to play a Canadian?

A: I watched Strange Brew.

Q: Because the film takes us through a day in Los Angeles, what's your favourite spot to visit in L.A.?

A: I would say Amoeba Records. I love going there if I have any time. And it's the only record store in Los Angeles. It's awesome.

Q: Your character Michael rocks the mixed-tapes in this movie. What was on the last mixed-tape you made and who was it for?

A: I do remember the last mixed-tape I made. It was for my wife-to-be. She whipped it out a couple of years ago and we played it and it's hilarious just because it's so pretentious. On one side were delicate acoustic ballads. I'm sure REM's 'Hairshirt' was on there. 'Nightswimming' would have been too obvious, so I went for the deep tracks from 'Green.' And then the other side was rock. Something from Wilco. My wife still has the tape, somewhere. My idea for the [Passenger Side] soundtrack is that they release it on cassette only.

Q: You were Derek in Step Brothers. Do you get people approaching you and wanting to touch your ab muscles?

A: (Laughs) When I say I rub my belly with Kiehl's every morning? Once I went into Kiehl’s in L.A. and they gave me a bunch of free stuff.

Q: Were those your real abs in that movie?

A: No. We were shooting that scene and I saw this really hot dude in my wardrobe and I was like, 'Who is this guy?' And they said, 'This really f---ing cut dude is the ab guy.' He was this insanely handsome fit guy and when he pulled his shirt up he had these perfect abs. But seriously I don't get the ab one that much. I get 'Brennan has a man-gina' and 'It's the f---ing Catalina Wine Mixer.'

Q: In your new TV show Party Down you play a failed actor who has turned to catering. If acting hadn't worked out what you have become?

A: Probably something similar to that 'cause I don't have any other options. It would probably be something like catering or microsurgery. I would probably be a brain surgeon.

Q: You're in an upcoming movie called Piranha 3-D so will audiences get a chance to see you get eaten in 3-D?

A: I can't tell you that. I can tell you a lot of people get eaten in this movie, but by werewolves. That's the twist. And . . . it's going to come out in time for Oscar season
