Not much appears to happen in Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman's directorial debut. Yet this film is deep and resonant and artfully written, directed and acted. Plus, if you are interested in real life, plenty happens after all.
The scenario: Two lonely, odd people in New York (Hoffman and Amy Ryan) awkwardly try to navigate the murky waters of a new romance. Meanwhile, their best friends seem to be screwing up their relationship in all the worst ways. Makes it even harder for our hapless hero and heroine.
And we empathize as Hoffman takes us on a journey into the heart of darkness, but towards the light, in the human soul.
