A Girl At The Window (Une jeune fille a la fenetre) is a debut feature film from writer/director Francis Leclerc. It is a sombre and heartfelt sort of movie, and no doubt was a labor of love for its creator. It is always difficult to get a movie made in this country in the first place. This leaves us to be the grinch who has to say that A Girl At The Window is mostly pretty dull fare.
Fanny Mallette is Marthe, a country girl with musical talent. Her family cannot afford the piano lessons she wants in the big city, so Marthe takes matters into her own hands. She is bold, considering it's 1925 -- Marthe tells a local man she will eventually marry him if he will be her music sponsor. Done.
