There are two simple ways to look at the complications presented by Alfie, the story of a callow young man whose selfish womanizing leaves a trail of broken dreams in his wake.
One is to take director Charles Shyer's contemporary version -- which he co-wrote with post-feminist, sketch comedy specialist Elaine Pope -- on its own terms. It must stand alone.
