All Or Nothing is a film that considers the power of love in the lives of its English, lower-class characters. It also demonstrates how the equally powerful absence of love can devastate people, leaving them either numbed to life or so full of vitriol that they can't realize the damage they're inflicting.
British writer-director Mike Leigh, the man who's given us such films as Secrets And Lies and Topsy-Turvy, has crafted a bleak, at times grimly humorous, examination of lower-class life that packs a powerful emotional wallop in its unflinching climax. The film features such an uncanny ear for dialogue, characterization and situations that it seems almost like a documentary. The ensemble cast, which includes names that are likely mostly unknown on this side of the pond, bring their characters startlingly to life.
