The advertising slogan for American Outlaws is "Bad is good again." To which we say, only a truly confident movie would hand that sort of set-up to reviewers.
American Outlaws is indeed a confident piece of work. Director Les Mayfield (Blue Streak) has chosen a much-interpreted subject -- the exploits of the legendary Jesse James -- and makes no attempt at originality. But unless you insist on a reinvention of the dusty old western genre, you need not be disappointed.
