The Mexican film Amores Perros is a harrowing experience.

The title loosely translates as Love's a Bitch which gives director Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu complete licence to show just how cruel life can be. It's not a gratuitous title as dogs play an important role in the lives of all the major characters.

In Mexico City, there is an expression that goes something like this in the English translation: 'I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I was mugged in an alley in Mexico City. The good news is I got away before the police arrived.'
