Ashes need some humour mixed in
Frank McCourt spun the tragedies of his youth into the Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography Angela's Ashes.

 His memories of growing up in abject poverty in the 1930s in the Irish village of Limerick make Charles Dickens and Victor Hugo seem positively cheerful and uplifting.
