When brothers Larry and Andy Wachowski wrote and directed 1999's The Matrix, they boldly stated that they'd created a story - nay, a living, breathing universe - that would span three feature films. And then some.

The "and then some" comes largely in the form of The Animatrix, a collection of nine short films by (or inspired by) acclaimed Japanese animators, filling in bits of Matrix backstory by way of cool, quirky and disquieting tales.
