The sophisticated and intelligent film At Five In The Afternoon is poetic and also a harsh, realistic film about life in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban.
So it is astonishing to think of how young the writer-director, Iranian Samira Makhmalbaf, really is. At 23, she has already made three feature films. This latest one earned her the Jury Prize at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and also played at the Toronto film festival, as have each of her earlier efforts, The Apple (1997) and Blackboards (2000).
