Brazilian director Walter Salles, of Central Station renown, is back with an exquisitely crafted period piece about two families locked in a deadly blood feud over land.
The film is Behind The Sun, a sometimes breathtaking example of how old-fashioned cinema can still be quietly thrilling, especially as alternative programming to the special effects-driven flicks, with their adventure stories and comic book characters. That stuff can be terrific entertainment. This is different -- heady, heavier fare with dignity and strength.
