Movie Review: Black And White

The true colours of life
Director James Toback loves to mix it up.

 In his 1978 film Fingers, his protagonist, played by Harvey Keitel, was a would-be concert pianist who sidelined as a strong-arm man for his gangster father. It was high art and primitive violence in one package.

B&W plays the race card
James Toback's kinetic, street-wise, New York drama Black And White is less a movie than it is a rap song with visuals and a deliberately disturbing obsession with race.

 With searing hot, hip-hop music driving this erratic vehicle, Black And White is not conventional cinema in the usual Hollywood sense, certainly not with Toback's socio-political agenda and his bizarrely eclectic casting choices.
