A sorrowful film, Bus 174 is a terrific example of artful documentary. It takes a seemingly minor tragedy in a world of troubles -- a hostage-taking on a bus in Rio -- and draws a direct line to a truly horrific larger issue.

That issue is the plight of thousands of street children in Rio de Janeiro, victims of random executions by police and the most barbaric forms of incarceration imaginable.
