Movie Review: Butterfly

Floats like a Butterfly
One of those rare films that works beautifully on two levels at once, Butterfly is two very different coming-of-age stories told as one: a young boy discovering the wonders of the world, and a nation teetering on the brink of drastic political change. It opens today at the Princess II.

Based on a portion of Manuel Riva's novel Que Me Quieres, Amor and directed by Jose Luis Cuerda, Butterfly is set in a village in Spain's Galicia region on the cusp of the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s, pitting the Republicans against the Fascists.

Captivating Butterfly
Butterfly is a haunting Spanish family drama set in a tiny village in Republican Spain in 1936, immediately before the Spanish Civil War set the country on the path to fascism.
