Movie Review: Cheaper By The Dozen

A Dozen laughs
The new version of Cheaper by the Dozen certainly doesn't buy into the old '50s TV adage that father knows best.

Instead, it takes its comic premise from such films as Daddy Day Care and such TV fare as Home Improvement and Everybody Loves Raymond that purport men put in charge of young children is a recipe for mayhem.

Obnoxious and annoying times twelve
Cheaper By The Dozen was a brisk family comedy 53 years ago, with Clifton Webb and Myrna Loy as the parents of a huge clan of kids who good-naturedly confuse the lives of their hapless parents.

Director Walter Lang's movie was based on the true-life story of the Gilbreth family of Providence, R.I. The Gilbreths produced a book of their zany but loving experiences. That was the inspiration for the movie script, so it had a certain quaint ring of authenticity to it.
