Movie Review: Core

The Core scores
There are few places Hollywood can go where the intrepid Victorian writer Jules Verne didn't leave his footprints. Such is the case with The Core and its story about a fantastic adventure.

Verne's 1865 novel, A Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and the 1959 film that followed were considerably more innocent than The Core, opening in town today.

It's fun to the Core
On one hand, the distributors of the sci-fi popcorn film The Core were right not to succumb to kneejerk pressure and yank their film in the wake of the Columbia disaster.

On the other, it's disingenuous to imply -- as the studio did -- that the shuttle crash scene is a bit player in this utterly preposterous (but fun) tectonic version of Fantastic Voyage.
