Cotton Mary is the story of a middle-aged Anglo-Indian nurse who struggles to find her place in the turbulent society of post-World War II India.
On that bare-bones story level, Ismail Merchant's film is a worthy topic of interest. The marginalized Anglo-Indian community, a tiny, troubled relic of 500 years of European incursions into South Asia, is an intriguing one because it focuses issues of class, race and colour into a microcosm.
