The Claim, a tale of riches gained and souls lost after the 1849 California gold rush, is loosely based on English author Thomas Hardy's The Mayor Of Casterbridge.

Hardy's grimly tragic 1886 novel is much tougher in exacting emotional tolls than The Claim, which was adapted for the screen by Liverpudlian Frank Cottrell Boyce.
