Desi's Looking For A New Girl, an earnest American indie made with and for the Latina lesbian community, isn't likely to wow anybody -- including Latina lesbians.
The film, which clocks in a little under an hour-and-a-half, is shot primitively by first-time writer/director Mary Guzman. She shoots some scenes poorly, such as Desi's early confrontation with her ex-lover -- here, she eschews intimacy and close-ups of the actors and instead films the static scene from a distance, sapping the encounter of its dramatic weight. And there are some rough audio moments, where you can't hear what's being said clearly.
