Movie Review: Divine Secrets Of The Ya Ya Sisterhood

Sister sorrow
Callie Khouri is the woman who wrote Thelma & Louise and won an Academy Award for her efforts. For her debut as a feature director, she has taken on a massive Southern novel with a complicated time structure and assembled a cast that includes Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, Ashley Judd, Dame Maggie Smith, Shirley Knight and Fionnula Flanagan.

Ambitious? The woman has cast-iron cojones.

Divine intervention
In this testosterone-fuelled summer movie season, it's a treat to find a film like Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

By no means a great movie, Sisterhood has such a divine combination of comedy and pathos that it overflows with enough humour and heart to make it a winning diversion.
