Two decades ago, my first feature assignment as an intern at the Ottawa Citizen was to hang out with a group of teenage skateboarders at the city's Boys And Girls club.

All I still have in my head from the assignment are painful mental visuals of guys falling over and over, and memories of a stream of enthusiastic babble about paradise on the West Coast and the heroes who lived there.
