Movie Review: 8 1 2 Women

8 Women, 1 murder
Screen iceberg Catherine Deneuve is not normally associated with high hilarity, but for her role in the ensemble comedy, 8 Women, all bets are off.

Having discovered what he calls a "really stupid play" from the 1960s, director Francois Ozon turned that stupid play into a very funny movie and upped the ante on the humour front by casting a handful of France's most revered actresses. In addition to Deneuve, the film stars Isabelle Huppert, Fanny Ardant, Emmanuelle Beart, Danielle Darrieux, Virginie Ledoyen, Ludivine Sagnier and Firmine Richard.

Too tedious
English intellectual Peter Greenaway's cinema remains carnal, perverted and sometimes disgusting.

But he always spruces up his gutter sensibilities with a glossy shine, a painterly vision and an astonishing bravado that is difficult to deny. Greenaway's latest slice of beautiful ugliness, the Fellini-inspired 8 1/2 Women, is no exception.
