Deepa Mehta's new film Earth is set in 1947, when the newly independent India was being partitioned into India and Pakistan.
It is one of those terrible historical ironies that Gandhi's efforts to expel Britain from the country was a relatively peaceful revolution. But once that goal was reached, the country degenerated into apocalyptic violence between Muslim, Sihk and Hindu, three sects that had lived in relative harmony for centuries. The subsequent death toll would reach one million.
