It is useful to be reminded that, first and foremost, Ian McKellen is a veteran actor and not just a fantasy superhero or a comicbook supervillain.

That is not to say that his performances as Gandalf in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy or as Magneto in the X-Men series are not finely wrought. Sir Ian actually brings an astonishing level of depth and complexity to them.
