Lauren and Katie do not meet cute, can't stand the sight of each other and end up as BFFs in For A Good Time, Call..., a terrific comedy about female friendship.
Distinguished by fresh faces, fresh writing and a generally sunny spirit, For A Good Time, Call... stars Ari Graynor as Katie, an attractive flake in Manhattan who can't afford her apartment, and Lauren Miller as Lauren, a bit of a priss who's just been dumped by her boring boyfriend -- and so has nowhere to live.
Katie and Lauren were at college together years before and have a healthy contempt for one another. However, their mutual friend Jesse (Justin Long, spectacularly funny here) gets them together, pointing out that neither can afford to live alone and be picky. The women agree to be roommates; before too long, Lauren discovers that flakey Katie is working for a phone sex company.
Lauren is appalled. Also, as a businesswoman, she can't believe Katie is paying a middle man and earning peanuts when she could have her own phone sex line and really bring in the money.
Time passes. Lauren is less inclined to judge Katie about the phone sex thing after she loses her job. She joins Katie in the phone trade, prompting some oddly endearing scenes about friendship, mentoring, and large, rubber sex toys. After that, she and Katie get serious about earning money in the world of phone sex (Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen offer cameos as some of the guys on the other end of the phone service.)
For A Good Time, Call... is organized just like a romantic comedy, only the fab emotions being uncovered here relate to the wonders of having a best friend you love and trust. The film is a buddy movie remade for bosom buddies, you might say.
Well, you probably wouldn't say.
What you could say is that when it comes to raunchy comedy, what's good for the goose is good for the gander. For A Good Time, Call... is rude, crude and entirely sweet-natured, and much of its charm comes directly from the screen magic generated by Ari Graynor and Lauren Miller.
Miller co-wrote the script with one of her real-life best friends, Katie Anne Naylon. Can't wait to see what they do next.
