Movie Review: The Forgotten

Try to forget Sixth Sense
There are inherent problems with gimmicky movies, not the least being the gimmick has to pay off for the film to work.

Two hours of viewing time is all but flushed down the toilet if the final revelation either falls flat or the audience has already figured out the ending long before the final credits roll.

Forgettable
The Forgotten starts out as a well-crafted psychological thriller and then turns -- somewhat abruptly -- into science fiction. The film, which stars Julianne Moore and Dominic West, should have worked, and worked well. It does not. What tips the balance is a spectacularly stupid special effect.

Julianne Moore stars in The Forgotten as a woman named Telly Paretta. Telly is either mourning a dead child or else she is in a delusional state. One day she looks longingly at photos of her lost son. The next day, the photos are gone, the home movies are blank and even Telly's husband swears they never even had a child. It's all a reaction to a miscarriage, they tell her. Telly's psychiatrist (Gary Sinise) hopes he won't have to put her in hospital.
