There was a time when having John Carpenter's name in the credits could bring a measure of cachet to just about any film. This was certainly the case in the '80s and early'90s, when the venerated master of horror and sci-fi was making genre classics such as "Escape from New York", "The Thing", and "Prince of Darkness" -- all films strong on style and attitude, and compelling enough to warrant a devoted cult following.
But all things come to an end, and if Carpenter's "Ghosts Of Mars" is any indication, his golden days are long past. "Ghosts Of Mars" is, quite simply, a wretched exercise in shlock sci-fi from a filmmaker who ought to know better, and who -- if his recent work is any indication -- seems to be in the midst of a precipitous slide into creative oblivion.
