When a movie fails to ignite, the problem is usually in the script or in the casting.
Since you'd be hard pressed to believe there was a script for Hanging Up, it would seem that the players are suspect: Here are Diane Keaton, Meg Ryan and Lisa Kudrow playing sisters, and then some fool casts Walter Matthau as their crabby father. Why underline the lightweights by putting them in scenes with a real actor? It makes no sense.
