Zhang Yimou's new movie, Happy Times, is a comedy of money-grubbing manners -- with a small, painful social truth stuck right in its funnybone. Absurd at the outset, it slowly works itself into a love story of sorts.

The middle-aged Zhao (Zhao Benshan) needs money. Everybody needs money. All his co-workers need money. Zhao wants to marry the plump and calculating woman of his dreams, and she wants an expensive wedding -- because she's into money, too.
