The Rocky Horror Picture Show finally has a serious rival for the top of the transvestite rock musical heap: It's John Cameron Mitchell's loud, lusty and thoroughly entertaining Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

While it's doubtful that Hedwig will ever achieve the same cult status as Rocky Horror, the new flick is its equal in audacity, song quality and rebelliousness. Both have shock appeal, but Hedwig is better than Rocky for its underbelly of emotional truth and its surprising poignancy.
