Movie Review: Honey

Honey, I shrunk the script
By LOUIS B. HOBSON

Honey Daniels may not be a welder by day, but the girl's just gotta dance like her counterpart in Flashdance.

Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba), the heroine of Honey, works as a bartender in a dance club. Each night, she counts the seconds until her shift is over so she can get out on that dance floor and sweat to the music. Never mind Saturday night fever, Honey has every night fever.

It's during one of Honey's transcendental expressions of joy that a videographer tapes her and shows her moves to hot video director Michael Ellis (David Moscow). It's not immediately obvious to Honey whether Ellis wants her for his bed or his videos, but he does instantly make her a star. She not only gets to dance in videos for hip hop artists Jadakiss and Tweet but gets to direct them as well.

While she's putting her moves on tape, Ellis starts putting his moves on Honey. She's a good girl so she rejects his advances which ends in Ellis firing her and ending her budding career. This is actually the best thing that could happen to Honey because her heart isn't in this fame thing.

She'd rather open a dance school to get inner-city kids of the streets and away from lives of crime. She wants them to dance their little hearts out to find the same joy as she has.

It all sounds a lot cornier than it comes off in the film.

Alba looks sensational and she can move.

She handles the melodrama like a pro especially when she is confronting her mother, the lecherous Ellis and the local drug dealer.

Honey marks the feature film debut of Bille Woodruff, who learned his craft directing *NSYNC and Britney Spears videos.

The final dance extravaganza at the benefit Honey throws to raise enough money to open her dance studio is dynamite.

(This film is rated PG)
