As a penetrating insight into the dark side of the human condition, The Human Stain is not a pretty picture. Hence the bleak, even disturbing title.

There is truth in advertising here. Like Philip Roth's source novel, this is a depressing experience that begins with a senseless tragedy and manages to tell some even tougher stuff from the past in the layered flashbacks.
