When acclaimed Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf's Kandahar made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May, the name of his film did not have the resonance it does today.
Now, with the United States and its Allies bombing Kandahar -- and other strongholds held by the Taliban in Afghanistan -- the name of this city explodes in our consciousness. Rather obviously, world events have dramatically increased people's interest in Afghani stories, in this case one with an incidental Canadian connection.
