Martin Scorsese's classic concert film The Last Waltz is, indeed, about The Band. It's also about a band -- and that, extracted from the rock legend that's grown out of it, is what remains most striking about the movie a quarter-century after it was filmed.
The Last Waltz, an impressionistic document of The Band's farewell concert at San Francisco's Winterland Theatre in November of 1976, was first released in 1978. A (loose) 25th anniversary re-release of the film, complete with digital touch-ups overseen by Scorsese and Robbie Robertson, begins a limited theatrical run today and comes out on DVD next month.
