The serial killer at work in The Minus Man is not your average psycho. His lineage is not Hannibal Lecter but perhaps Alan Arkin's sad mute from The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. Arkin's character was deaf. Vann Siegert's (Owen Wilson) affliction is he poisons people. Otherwise, he's a nice guy -- or at least as nice as he has to be to indulge his impulses without calling attention to himself.
We meet Vann as he washes his pickup and heads down the West Coast to plant new roots. On the road, he meets a troubled junkie (Sheryl Crow) in a bar and gives her a lift. At a rest stop, she shoots up, Vann offers her a drink from his flask and soon he's propping up her body in a bathroom stall with the needle in her arm -- the victim of an apparent overdose.
