After a bit of wine with lunch, May impetuously kisses Darren on the lips. Not such an odd event in a romantic movie, except that May is 60-ish and Darren is about 30.
The Mother, a film that boldly goes where others fear to tread, is a marvellous tale about sex, love, age and family. May (Anne Reid) is a dear, plump, ordinary older woman, long-married and all that. She and her husband travel to London to visit their adult children and their grandchildren. Their children are a workaholic yuppie son (Steven Mackintosh) and a ditzy daughter (Cathryn Bradshaw); the grandchildren are, typically, not too interested in their elderly grandparents.
